Better the Devil You Know CPD Seminar Series 2025

Arnot Manderson Advocates are looking forward to welcoming five new Devils, Euan Bruce, Caitlin Connor, Darren Cox, Jamie Perriam and Alan Wickham to the Stable upon their calling to the Bar at the end of June.  To mark their transition from “Devil” to “Advocate” Arnot Manderson Advocates are pleased to dust off our snappiest ever CPD event title and invite you to: “Better the Devil You Know”.

Besides giving you an introduction to the freshest legal talent to reach the Bar you will be treated to a range of informative and topical CPD talks updating you on a variety of practice areas which will exemplify the full service nature of Arnot Manderson.  The series will feature two seminars each starting at 4pm and will end with a Q&A Session and a brief wine reception.

Each seminar is accredited by the Faculty of Advocates (and by extension by the Law Society) for one hour of – free - CPD and each will feature a question and answer session. These events are free but places are limited and early booking is recommended. Please use the booking links below to register your place. 18th June, 4pm – Alan Wickham, Caitlin Connor and Jamie Perriam

4:05pm – Alan Wickham - Divergence between the disciplines

Alan will discuss the growing difference between criminal and civil cases on the requirement to put the case to a witness in cross examination.

4:40pm – Caitlin Connor - Conspiracy uncovered – a consideration of unlawful means conspiracy claims in public procurement and commercial litigation

Claims of unlawful means conspiracy have risen in popularity in Scotland, following an increase in such claims south of the border in recent years. Caitlin will examine the ingredients of the delict of unlawful means conspiracy by reference to two recent decisions: Roche Diagnostics Ltd v Greater Glasgow Health Board & Anor [2024] SLT 880 and Kidd v Lime Rock Management LLP & Ors [2025] CSIH 11. Caitlin will offer brief reflections on whether uncertainty in the law in this area remains and on practical considerations for claimants.

5:15pm – Jamie Perriam - I need (dis)closure: principles and practicalities in document recovery

Jamie examines how recent developments in group proceedings, both reported and otherwise, may have wider consequences for legal practitioners when it comes to document disclosure – as well as other points of procedure.

4:05pm – Darren Cox - Preliminary challenges in judicial review

Darren will consider challenges which can be taken to the competency of judicial review proceedings, how those challenges are to be raised and ways in which they might be resisted. In particular, he will explore the issue of suitable alternative remedies following a number of recent decisions of the Court of Session.

4:40pm – Euan Bruce -  Implementation of the recommendations of a public inquiry

Euan will explore implementation of the recommendations of a statutory public inquiry. This talk will cover the significance of recommendations in the public inquiry context, the legal framework, the means by which an inquiry can monitor implementation of its recommendations and what future developments may be appropriate.
