Around the World: Comparing Freedom of Speech Between Denmark and the UK | Law Society of Scotland
29 July 2026
Live online | 1 hour’s verifiable CPD
Freedom of speech and protest are rights enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights and the Human Rights Act for UK citizens, and yet reports from the Human Rights Watch suggest that these rights are under attack in the UK.
This webinar will explore and compare the legal protections for freedom of speech and protest in the UK and Denmark, a country widely recognised for its strong commitment to safeguarding these rights.
Professor Sten Schaumburg-Müller of the University of Southern Denmark and Professor David Mead of the University of East Anglia will examine the current state of freedom of speech and protest in both countries. They will discuss the challenges facing these freedoms and consider what steps the UK can take to strengthen, rather than diminish, the protection of these rights.
