The event programme is:

4:15pm- Registration, tea & coffee in Jura Suite
4:30pm- Welcome and introduction from event chair

4:35pm Alan Wickham- “Protests and Prosecution for Palestine, a discussion on the use of the criminal law to sanction protestors”

Since the proscription of Palestine Action from 5 July 2025, there has been significant media attention on the numbers of individuals arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000 for displaying support for a proscribed organisation. This talk aims to provide a guide for practitioners on the approach to such cases, with references to key cases and examples.

5:05pm Jonathan Deans- “An overview of criminal appeals”

Jonathan Deans will discuss the different kinds of criminal appeal, looking at not just appeals against conviction and appeals against sentence but also lesser used remedies such as bills of suspension and petitions to the Nobile Officium.

5:35pm Sarah Loosemore – “How to approach a sexual offences trial in the wake of recent appellate developments”

The past few years have seen significant developments in the law of corroboration and s. 275 from the High Court of Appeal, particularly with the two Lord Advocate’s References, in which Sarah was instructed. This talk will explore the implications of these developments for conducting sexual offences trials and try to answer the question of how best to protect your client’s interests in the current landscape. What evidence is now available to the Crown as corroboration? What limits are there on the evidence that can be corroborative? When is it worth making a 275 application? Sarah, who was also part of the team presenting the appeal at the Supreme Court, discusses what impact the long-awaited UKSC decision might have on this area of law.
