Thorntons is growing its work experience offering with the PRIME initiative, following a successful first year which saw 21 pupils complete week-long placements in Edinburgh and Dundee.

This year, the firm will expand the programme to include Glasgow with up to 30 placements available across the three offices, with applications opening in January.

PRIME is a UK-wide alliance of law firms and in-house legal teams committed to improving access to the legal profession among young people from less privileged backgrounds.

Students accepted onto the programme undertake a week of immersive legal insight, including case studies, presentations and interactive workshops, alongside visits to courts and universities. They also receive mentorship from experienced solicitors, who guide them through legal tasks and give insight into life as a lawyer.

Students’ feedback included: “It’s been everything I hoped for. It was amazing to experience the different types of law and meet incredible people.”

Fiona Stewart, head of talent acquisition at Thorntons, said: “We’ve been genuinely inspired by the fantastic young people who’ve taken part, and delighted by the positive feedback they’ve shared about their experience. The programme doesn’t just open the door to a legal career for a broader range of people. It also helps participants build real confidence, along with practical and interpersonal skills that will support them as they take their next steps.”

Applications for the 2026 placements will open in January. The firm encourages work-experience coordinators in schools and local authorities to share details of the scheme with eligible pupils who would benefit from early access to legal careers.

The 2026 placements are scheduled as follows: Glasgow 29 June-3 July, Edinburgh 6-10 July, and Dundee 20-24 July. Students can access help with travel and expenses where needed.
