EU law expert Professor Tobias Lock has joined Maynooth University Department of Law from Edinburgh Law School.

At Edinburgh, Professor Lock was lecturer and then senior lecturer in EU law from 2013-18, having previously lectured at University College London, the University of Surrey and the University of Erlangen, where he obtained most of his legal education.

Professor Lock’s research interest lies broadly in the EU’s multilevel relations with other legal orders. He has published two books on the relations between the European Court of Justice and international courts, and produced work on the relationship between the EU and the European Convention on Human Rights.

His other research interests include EU constitutional law; comparative constitutional law; and law and religion.

His work on Brexit, giving written and oral evidence to various parliamentary committees in London, Edinburgh and Cardiff and producing briefing papers for the Scottish Parliament and National Assembly for Wales, was recognised with a British Academy Rising Star Engagement Award in 2018.

Commenting on his appointment, Professor Lock told our sister publication Irish Legal News: “I am delighted to be joining Maynooth University and very much look forward to working with students and colleagues in this truly innovative law department.

“Maynooth has made some really good appointments in my areas of interest recently and I am confident we can all thrive as a team of researchers here at Maynooth.”
