PDSO Falkirk takes on law graduate for six-week internship

James Calder

The Public Defence Solicitors’ Office (PDSO) welcomed James Calder for a six-week internship at its Falkirk office on 21 July.

James has taken up the first intern post at PDSO Falkirk, following the success of a pilot internship at PDSO Dundee last year.

A report compiled after last year’s internship underlined the value of law students getting hands-on experience of legal work and real-world exposure to the criminal justice system.

That experience is largely what drew James, who is from Glasgow and graduated this summer from the University of Aberdeen with a Scots Law LLB degree, to apply. He will be returning to Aberdeen in the autumn to complete the diploma in professional legal practice.

He said criminal law has always felt like the most interesting and meaningful area of law, not least because of the practical and court-based elements.

“I was actively looking for experience opportunities for the summer, but I didn’t want to apply to dozens of placements I wasn’t passionate about, as there are more opportunities for internships in commercial law or contracts,” he said.

“So, when I saw this internship opportunity with PDSO, which is entirely focused on criminal law, I jumped at it and was delighted to be accepted.

“The placement is going to be hugely beneficial for me. Up until now, I’ve only had a few short shadowing or work experience placements, so six weeks in this role will give me much deeper insight.

“I’m especially looking forward to seeing the behind-the-scenes work that goes into building a case, preparing for trials, and understanding the full process from start to finish.”

Director of client legal services, Carolyn McLeod, said: “This PDSO internship plays a pivotal role in our efforts to highlight the engaging and rewarding work that a career in legal aid can offer, aiming to attract talented individuals who can contribute to the life-changing work we do.

“The level of interest in this PDSO opportunity was unprecedented, with the 50 applicants setting an extremely high bar. After a rigorous assessment process, I am delighted to welcome James to our directorate and look forward to seeing him flourish during his six weeks with us.”

Head of office at PDSO Falkirk, Laura Jackson, said: “James was an outstanding candidate in a very strong field. He demonstrated an interest in criminal defence work stretching back many years, and we are all delighted to have him join our team at PDSO Falkirk.”
