Greece: Leaders of far-right criminal organisation Golden Dawn jailed

Leaders of Golden Dawn, the formerly insurgent far-right party of Greek politics, have been jailed after a court ruled the party is a criminal organisation linked to violent attacks including a 2013 murder.

Party founder and leader Nikolaos Michaloliakos, along with six former Golden Dawn parliamentarians, were convicted last week of “leading a criminal organisation”. All but one were sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment yesterday.

Eleven more former parliamentarians have been given sentences ranging from five to seven years for membership of a criminal organisation, Euronews reports.

Golden Dawn member Giorgos Roupakias was given a life sentence for the 2013 murder of anti-fascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas, whose death sparked mass protests and marked the start of the unravelling of the party’s success.
