Family of British woman killed in Syria launch legal bid to return her body to UK

The family of a British woman who was killed in Syria while fighting against ISIS alongside Kurdish militants has launched a legal bid to have her body returned to the UK.

The body of Anna Campbell is in territory now controlled by Turkey and Turkish-backed fighters, and human rights firm McCue & Partners has been instructed to make formal representations to the Turkish government for her return.

Her father, Dirk Campbell, said the UK government had failed to help and he has instead instructed the law firm to contact Turkey and take legal action “if necessary”.

A crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for the legal challenge has so far raised nearly £4,000 from around 100 people.

Mr Campbell said: “I have not even been accorded the courtesy of a reply to my repeated request to the Turkish embassy in London. My meetings with the Foreign Office have proved fruitless despite promises to ‘do our best’. My MP has done nothing to help. I have been left with no option but to seek legal action.

“Anna gave her life fighting for freedom and the rights and lives of others. It is an embarrassment to the UK and a disgrace and shame on Turkey that her body has been left to rot in the rubble of a ruined city.”
