Dark clouds remain over Dundee University forensic science institute

The University of Dundee’s forensic science research hub is reportedly still under threat despite a new recovery plan which was said to rule out compulsory redundancies.
The university has launched a “collective consultation” with staff of the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science, The Courier reports.
The centre, the UK’s largest dedicated to enhancing the scientific quality of court evidence, specialises in cutting-edge technology to detect illicit drugs, explosives, and bodily fluids at crime scenes.
The university is now facing calls to pause the consultation pending an assessment of the new recovery plan, which proposes less than half of the 700 job cuts originally under consideration.
A spokesperson for the university said: “The Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science is funded by a 10-year grant from the Leverhulme Trust, which runs until July 2026.
“As the external funding is coming to an end, we entered into collective consultation with staff in the centre at an early stage – and that process is continuing.
“This is normal process when we are approaching the end of a large, externally funded project.
“We are committed to maintaining a strong forensic science provision, including in support of the justice system.”
