CMS webinar on greenwashing and HFSS foods

CMS webinar on greenwashing and HFSS foods

CMS is staging an event later this week for food & drink sector businesses looking at advertising compliance, including in relation to greenwashing and HFSS foods, and product labelling.

The free-to-attend webinar, being held on Thursday will be led by CMS experts who will discuss the potential threat of greenwashing allegations resulting from companies’ advertising claims. The event will highlight recent decisions by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) in relation to greenwashing within the food & drink industry and outline plans by the ASA and the Competition and Markets Authority to step up enforcement in this area.

CMS environment lawyer Joanna Waddell and CMS’s head of advertising, Stuart Helmer, will also look at the latest ASA rulings on High Fat Salt and Sugar (HFSS) advertising and on the government’s shifting plans to further restrict the promotion of products that fall into the HFSS category.

Ms Waddell said: “This CMS webinar will look at the issue of greenwashing, focusing on the potential risks facing the food and drink sector, where provenance and sustainability credentials lie at the heart of how many companies promote themselves. We will examine the ASA’s increasing enforcement in this area as well as plans to impose further advertising restrictions on HFSS products.

“While we will be updating the changing landscape on these key issues, we will also be encouraging food and drink businesses to review practices and ensure environmental claims being made through consumer marketing channels are credible and compliant.”
