Britain’s first trans judge crowdfunds to challenge UK in Strasbourg

Britain’s first transgender judge has launched a crowdfunding campaign in support of her bid to bring the UK before the European Court of Human Rights.
Dr Victoria McCloud resigned as a Master of the English High Court in 2024, saying she had concluded that it was no longer “possible in a dignified way to be both trans and a salaried, fairly prominent judge in the UK”.
The former judge, who now lives in Ireland, is seeking to take action in Strasbourg following UK Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on the definition of “woman” under the Equality Act 2010.
She argues that her rights under Articles 6, 8 and 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights were breached, in particular because the court refused her application to intervene in the case.
The Trans Legal Clinic, which is supporting Dr McCloud in her litigation, today launched a crowdfunder in support of her case.
“Your support will help cover legal costs, court fees, and the work needed to bring this historic case before the European Court of Human Rights,” the crowdfunding page states.
“Every donation is a step toward ensuring that trans people are not shut out of the courtroom when their very existence is on trial.”
