And finally... grand theft caughto

Peter Murrell, formerly one of the most influential figures in Scottish politics, faces prison after admitting to embezzling more than £400,000 from the SNP over 12 years and using the money to buy everything from a luxury car to the video game Grand Theft Auto V.

The hit series, which originated in Scotland and is still primarily made here, sees players engage in all manner of crime and act for gangsters – as well as corrupt politicians.

The indictment also records Murrell, the former husband of Nicola Sturgeon, as having bought advent calendars from Fortnum & Mason for £400 and having spent £442.20 on Le Cresuet mugs. He also spent £1,299 on a Miele CM6300 coffee machine as well as £3,232 on a Jura Giga 5 Cromo coffee machine. Yet he also bought Nescafé Gold Blend instant coffee, spending £81.16 of stolen funds on it in 2018. One of his most decadent purchases with the pilfered cash was a Caran d’Ache pencil sharpener, which costs £110.

Finally, he paid £160 for the Folio Society’s edition of Hannah Arendt’s The Origins of Totalitarianism.
