Principal Solicitor

Are you a solicitor, committed to tackling social injustice, who has the experience and skills to lead our small and dedicated staff team at Fife Law Centre, supporting those in our communities who face challenges in accessing conventional legal services?  We are looking for a talented individual to join and lead our team, to help tackle social injustice working with partner organisations and to provide qualified legal representation in areas of unmet legal need across Fife.

Fife Law Centre supports individuals and families at a time of crisis – at risk of eviction, denied legitimate financial support, on the wrong side of bureaucratic decision making, or the victim of violence, injustice or discrimination.

Our vision is:  The legal rights of people in Fife are protected and represented through challenging inequality and injustice.

Our purpose is: To provide an accessible, professional legal service to defend and support the legal rights of those unable to otherwise access legal representation or advice.

The successful candidate will require to hold an unrestricted Scottish practicing certificate and is likely to have at least 5 years PQE. We are looking for an experienced practitioner with a background in civil litigation and proven skills as a court practitioner.

The successful candidate will also:

meet the requirements for managing a legal practice in compliance with Law Society of Scotland regulations
will be an excellent team player with a commitment to equality and diversity
will have an awareness of how rights and advice issues impact on the local community.

Fife Law Centre is a company limited by guarantee and registered with OSCR as a charity. Fife Law Centre, through a Board of Trustees, provides the funding and strategic direction for Fife Community Law Ltd, for which the successful applicant will become the Principal Solicitor and Director of that company. We have been supported by Fife Council since 2008, and our core funding is currently in a three year cycle. In addition, we have been funded in a partnership project by the Scottish Legal Aid Board, and have also recently received additional funding from the Robertson Trust and the National Lottery Improving Lives Fund to develop outreach and expand our services.

Although staff are employed by Fife Law Centre, in compliance with the Law Society of Scotland’s requirements, the Board appoints a Principal Solicitor who is accountable to the Board for the management of the separate legal practice.
