Trial Advocacy Fundamentals | Law Society of Scotland
12 - 13 November 2026
In-person in Edinburgh | 14 hours’ verifiable CPD
Held at the Law Society of Scotland offices in Edinburgh and running over two days, this is a great opportunity for any practitioner looking to expand their practical advocacy skills.
You’ll spend your time building skills in examining and cross-examining witnesses across criminal trials and civil proofs, learning to do so with confidence and appropriate assertiveness. This will be supported by personalised feedback from our trainer, Angus Crawford of Expert Advocacy.
By the end, you will be able to:
- Maximise the effect of examination in chief and cross-examination
- Apply a range of effective questioning techniques
- Understand how communication style shapes outcomes
- Use active listening to respond effectively in real time
- Recognise supportive facts to draw out from a witness
- Identify the key areas to address in chief and cross-examination
- Use narrative and ‘story’ to present a case
- Make sure every question leads towards your final submissions and jury speeches
