Course: Commercial uses of rural land – for more than just the lawyers

A new course providing an introduction to the law and practice of commercial activity in rural Scotland will be run this autumn.

In 10 sessions and a masterclass it will bring together a wide range of legal and practical topics that lawyers, land agents and accountants working with businesses in rural Scotland should know about. These include traditional farming, sport and forestry, but also solar, hydro, carbon sequestration, BNG and others. There is no comparable course in Scotland.

Teaching the course: 10 in person, 2-hour sessions in Edinburgh between September and December 2025, at 1100-1300, capped by a final half-day masterclass for all attendees to consider a practical problem applying their acquired expertise to a realistic situation.

The teachers are the ‘three Mikes’: Blair, Yellowlees and Upton, two solicitors and an advocate – all of whom have wide experience in the field.

This will bring both junior professionals and those older but less experienced in the practice area up to speed and much better able to support professional work for the rural business client.
