US: Trump launches new lawsuit in wake of FBI raid

Donald Trump

Former US president Donald Trump has launched legal proceedings in a bid to secure the return of some of the documents seized during an FBI raid of his Florida home.

He has asked a federal judge to appoint a “special master” to examine the seized documents and for federal investigators to pause their work until that review is complete, CNN reports.

His lawyers argue that some of the documents taken from Mar-a-Lago in an unprecedented raid could be privileged and should be returned.

Anthony Coley, a spokesperson for the US Justice Department, said: “The Aug. 8 search warrant at Mar-a-Lago was authorised by a federal court upon the required finding of probable cause. The Department is aware of this evening’s motion. The United States will file its response in court.”

The dramatic raid on Mar-a-Lago two weeks ago was part of a criminal investigation into Mr Trump’s handling of classified documents.

The investigation comes as Mr Trump mulls a fresh bid for the presidency in the 2024 election.

If re-elected, Mr Trump would return to the White House at the age of 78, the same age President Biden was on becoming president in 2021.
