Two senators appointed to Inner House

Lord Armstrong and Lord Beckett have been appointed to the Second Division of the Court of Session effective from 23 June 2023 and 1 July 2023 respectively.

Lord Armstrong was appointed a judge of the Supreme Courts in February 2013.

He is a graduate of the University of Glasgow, and was admitted to Faculty in 1986 before being appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2000. He was standing junior counsel to the Department of Social Security from 1998 to 2000 and served as crown counsel from 2000 to 2003.

He was also a member of the Standing Committee on Legal Education in Scotland from 1995 to 1999; was a governor of Fettes College, Edinburgh, from 2001 to 2011 and was a member of the Advisory Panel to the School of Law of the University of Glasgow from 2009 to 2015. He held office as vice dean of the Faculty of Advocates from 2008 until 2013.

Lord Beckett was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Courts in May 2016 after serving as a temporary judge from 2008 in the High Court and the Court of Session.

He is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh and was admitted as a solicitor in 1986, working in private practice before being admitted to Faculty in 1993.

He was appointed an advocate depute in 2003 and took silk in 2005. He served as principal advocate depute and then solicitor general for Scotland in 2006. He became a sheriff in 2008 and was appointed as an appeal sheriff on the establishment of the Sheriff Appeal Court in 2015.
