SLCC consults on updated rules
The Scottish Legal Complaints Commission (SLCC) is consulting on draft updated rules.
The SLCC is required to make and publish rules about its practice and procedure. The Regulation of Legal Services (Scotland) Act 2025 makes changes to the SLCC’s powers and functions. These updated rules respond to those changes and set out what the SLCC’s practices and procedures will be once the relevant provisions of the Act are commenced.
A date has not yet been set by the Scottish government for commencement of the powers, but the SLCC has proposed commencement of all changes to its complaint powers on 1 July 2027.
Commenting on the consultation, CEO Neil Stevenson said: “The Regulation of Legal Services (Scotland) Act 2025 amends our existing legislation, so many elements of the rules will be familiar.
“That said, there are important changes which are consistent with the aims of the new Act that the system be more flexible and responsive, and more proportionate in terms of how complaints are handled. The rules maintain a focus on early resolution, and we hope will bring benefits for the public and the sector.
“We have also taken the opportunity to create a more user-friendly structure and a format that is clearer, more accessible and mirrors the customer journey.
“We’d welcome views from anyone who uses, or provides legal services, as well as consumer groups, the regulatory authorities and other stakeholders. Comments and any suggestions for improvements on our proposals will help to ensure they are clear, transparent and accessible.”
The consultation can be viewed here and is open until 5pm on 20 January 2027.
