Shoosmiths Scotland takes on charity challenges

Sheelagh Cooley, head of Shoosmiths’ Edinburgh office, is adept at advising clients on complex real estate transactions but the plucky lawyer felt far less sure-footed on Sunday when she literally took the plunge to abseil over 150ft off the Forth Rail Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in aid of the Edinburgh Food Project.
After joining other charity fundraisers who also abseiled off the iconic cantilever bridge (opened in 1890), Ms Cooley said: “It was initially nerve-wracking, but once I started it was exhilarating! Most importantly, it was a fantastic way for Shoosmiths to raise further funds for the Edinburgh Food Project.”
The dramatic abseil has raised over £1,800 towards Shoosmiths’ Edinburgh office target of £10,000 in aid of the Edinburgh Food Project. The charity is committed to providing emergency food supplies, including through seven foodbanks, and financial and welfare support to people in crisis throughout the capital.
Meanwhile Shoosmiths Glasgow office also continues to be busy devising energetic and creative ways to raise funds for Beatson Cancer Care, their chosen charity for 2025.
Earlier this month, teams of two donned their trainers to compete in a first past the post, step-charity challenge, covering the 350-mile distance between Shoosmiths’ Glasgow and London offices. Team Hoggles (Rachel Hogg and Michael Moyles) stepped-up to the challenge in style by sprinting to the finish line in under 25 days and leaving the other 12 teams behind. The fun and fiercely contested challenge helped to raised over £100.
And on 11 October, Wendy McLaughlin, a senior workplace co-ordinator in Shoosmiths’ Glasgow office will take to the floor as part of a six-strong team within The Garment Factory building to compete in a Strictly Come Dancing Style charity dance-off.
After months of training, including with professional dancers, Wendy aims to tango and cha, cha, cha her way across the glitzy Glasgow Hilton dancefloor, helping Shoosmiths Glasgow office in their bid to fundraise £10,000 for Beatson Cancer Care.
