New specialist evidence rooms open in Edinburgh

New specialised evidence rooms have opened for use at Victim Support Scotland’s offices in Edinburgh.

The rooms will allow witnesses and victims of crime to provide evidence remotely via a secure online link.

Representatives from the Crown Office visited Victim Support Scotland’s offices to see the new suites in use.

Kate Wallace, Victim Support Scotland chief executive, said: “By embracing technology, these rooms will be instrumental in improving access to justice for vulnerable victims and witnesses of crime by creating a safe space for them to give their evidence.

“Victims consistently tell us about the traumatic impact of giving evidence, including the anxiety of attending a court building, which can be intimidating.

“Being able to give evidence in a location away from the court can help alleviate these worries dramatically, meaning they can focus on giving their best evidence. This reduces the anxiety of potentially coming face to face with the accused, and going through the trauma of repeatedly telling their story.”
