Lord Sales has been sworn in as the new deputy president of the Supreme Court. Lord Doherty has been sworn in as a new justice of the Supreme Court.
Lord Sales was appointed to the role of Deputy President following the announcement of Lord Hodge’s retirement.
The ceremony took place in Courtroom 1 of the Supreme Court, and was witnessed by Lord Sales’ fellow justices, as well as family and friends.
A new justice of the Court, Lord Doherty, was also sworn in by Lord Reed. Lord Doherty was appointed to the court in November, following a long career in the Scottish judiciary. Lord Doherty’s family and friends were also present to witness the ceremony and congratulate him.
Both Lord Sales and Lord Doherty will also sit on the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, which hears appeals from many Commonwealth countries, as well as the United Kingdom’s overseas territories, crown dependencies, and military sovereign base areas.
Speaking after the ceremonies, the court’s President Lord Reed said: “I am very pleased by the appointment of Lord Sales and Lord Doherty to their new roles. I greatly look forward to working with both of them”.
