Lord Pentland to address challenges of AI at Glasgow event
The Lord President, Lord Pentland, will talk about the challenges of using AI in the justice system at an event being held by the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow (RFPG) this evening.
He will provide a unique insight into the risks and benefits of using the new technology, saying: “As head of the Scottish judiciary, the lord president’s priority is to build and maintain confidence in our system of justice, and in the legal profession, while safeguarding the rule of law. What does that all mean in the context of the AI revolution?”
He added that he will cover several key themes, including a brief overview of the international and domestic framework on AI, and why the judiciary, courts and tribunals need to embrace the new technology.
The judge, who will speak to members of the legal community at the RFPG offices, will also address the risks that AI poses for the rule of law, the judiciary and the legal profession.
He said: “How can artificial intelligence be harnessed by the judiciary to ensure the justice system is open, fair, accessible and maintains public trust.”
John Bett, dean of the RFPG, said: “The use of artificial intelligence across society is moving at such a pace that it’s vital to weigh up the benefits and risks when deciding how to best use the technology.
“This is particularly pertinent for the legal profession in Scotland. It will be fascinating to hear the views of Lord Pentland on the challenges involved of using AI in the justice system and how this will impact on lawyers.
“Lawyers currently using artificial intelligence or thinking about using the new technology also require guidance on ensuring that AI is used appropriately and ethically while maintaining public trust.”
