Lawyers invited to visit Court of Justice in Luxembourg

The Franco-British Lawyers Society is inviting practitioners to join its visit to the Court of Justice in Luxembourg, which will take place on 3 and 4 July.

The visit will start with a hearing at the General Court, to be preceded by a short introduction to the case from one of the référendaires assisting the reporting judge with the case. This will be followed by two talks by members of that court, M. Stéphane Gervasoni, one of the French judges at the General Court (to be given in French) and one by M. Geert de Baere, one of the Belgian judges (who will speak in English).

After that, there will be lunch in one of the dining rooms of the court, in the presence of members and other staff working there. This will provide a first-hand opportunity to mix in person with those responsible for delivering the judgments of the court and to discover more about how it operates.

After lunch, there will be a visit to the premises of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. The EPPO is an independent public prosecution office of the European Union and is responsible for investigating, prosecuting and bringing to judgment crimes against the financial interests of the EU. We shall be welcomed there by M. Frédéric Baab, the French European Prosecutor, who will give a presentation on the office’s activities. He will be accompanied by Madame Diane Le Gall, a national expert working within the service, and by Madame Amélie Rodrigues, counsellor in charge of the relations of the head of the European prosecutor’s service as regards third countries and, in particular, the United Kingdom.

In order to visit the court, it will be necessary to arrive no later than 8.15 am in order to pass through security there. There will be a drinks reception on the evening of 3 July, to be hosted by Ian Forrester, the president of the society. That will be followed by an informal dinner in a local restaurant which will be attended by vice president Papasavvas and others. There is no charge for the visit, but delegates are asked to pay for the dinner on 3 July.

For those wishing to participate, please complete the registration form and return it no later than 20 June to davidglux@yahoo.fr.
