Law lecturer takes leading role in National Youth Orchestras of Scotland

Dr Samuel White

Law lecturer Dr Samuel White has been appointed as chair of the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland (NYOS) board of trustees.

The appointment comes as NYOS prepares for its first international tour in a decade, with its flagship orchestra scheduled to perform at venues across the UK and at the Berlin Young Euro Classic in August.

Dr White is a senior lecturer in law at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS). A committed educator and lover of music, he is passionate about improving young peoples’ access to music and culture.

He was initially recruited onto the NYOS board in 2022 as one of three young trustees appointed to ensure that young people contribute to the governance of the organisation and will continue to champion youth voice in his new role as chair.

Speaking about his appointment, Dr White said: “It is a huge pleasure and privilege to take on the role of chair at such an important juncture in NYOS’ development.

“I very much look forward to continuing my work with the board in this new capacity as we collaborate with the whole NYOS team to deliver our ambitious and exciting plans this year and beyond.”

Dr White takes over from Lindsay Pell, a NYOS alumna who has stepped down after 13 years on the NYOS board supporting Scotland’s young musicians.
