Law firm’s warm welcome for new ‘cyber observatory’
Ralph Riddiough
A law firm has warmly welcomed plans for a new “cyber observatory” to protect Scottish public bodies from online threats.
Ralph Riddiough, director and head of corporate at Holmes Mackillop Solicitors, said the new initiative should serve as a reminder to private sector businesses as well.
The Scottish government last week unveiled the refreshed Strategic Framework for a Cyber Resilient Scotland.
The document details actions and support to “help people, businesses and organisations across Scotland, including local authorities, NHS boards and schools to recognise and prepare for inevitable cyber threats and ensure that Scotland stays ahead of the ever-growing cyber risk”.
A new “cyber observatory” in the Scottish Cyber Coordination Centre (SCCC) will analyse and share early warnings on cyber threats across the public sector, helping to identify emerging risks so organisations can be more proactive in managing the online threat.
Mr Riddiough said: “With the ever-increasing profile in the news of the horrendous consequences of failures in online security, the focus on cyber security is rightly high on the agenda of many organisations.
“This initiative makes the point that our economy as a whole is exposed to attacks on larger entities, with disruptions to supply chains and all that entails for businesses and jobs.
“As is so often the case, we all have an interest in the robustness of information security measures in public bodies and so this initiative is to be welcomed.
“It should serve as a reminder to the private sector that businesses must protect themselves to the highest possible standards. Businesses should review their practices, with expert input, ensure all staff are properly trained, and ensure all relevant insurances are in place.”
