Professor Justin Borg-Barthet of the University of Aberdeen has been reappointed to the European Commission’s Expert Group Against SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation), recognising his continued leadership in efforts to protect freedom of expression and strengthen democratic participation across Europe.

The European Commission’s Expert Group Against SLAPP advises the Commission on policy and legislative initiatives designed to combat abusive legal actions that seek to intimidate journalists, academics, civil society organisations, human rights defenders and others who speak out in the public interest. The group plays a central role in supporting the implementation and development of anti-SLAPP measures across the European Union.

Professor Borg-Barthet, an expert in EU law and private international law, and founder of the University of Aberdeen’s Anti-SLAPP Research Hub, has been at the forefront of international research on the legal mechanisms needed to counter abusive litigation. His work has contributed significantly to European debates on anti-SLAPP reform and helped inform policy and legal drafting discussions that ultimately led to legislative action at EU level.

He said: “SLAPPs pose a serious threat to freedom of expression, public participation and democratic accountability. I am pleased to continue serving on the European Commission’s Expert Group and to contribute to the development and implementation of effective safeguards for those who speak out in the public interest. The fight against abusive litigation remains as important as ever, and I look forward to working with colleagues across Europe to ensure that legal systems protect, rather than undermine, democratic debate.”

The reappointment highlights the University of Aberdeen’s growing international reputation in research addressing contemporary challenges to democracy, the rule of law and access to justice. Through its research and engagement activities, the University has established itself as a leading voice in the global movement to counter SLAPPs and strengthen protections for public participation.
