GCU academics nominated for legal prize
GCU Law academics Dr Andrew Tickell and Seonaid Stevenson-McCabe have been nominated for a research prize for leading a successful campaign to secure lifelong anonymity for victims of sexual offences in Scotland.
The Glasgow Caledonian University lecturers have been shortlisted for the Socio-Legal Studies Association’s Impact Prize for 2026 for their work on The Campaign for Complainer Anonymity.
Established with GCU students, the five-year campaign called for the legal protection of victims to be enshrined in Scots law.
It led to MSPs including a lifelong right to privacy and a clear framework for reporting on cases and commenting online in The Victims, Witnesses, and Justice Reform (Scotland) Act.
Dr Tickell said: “Our research played a substantial role in this campaign - being shared with the Scottish government at an early stage in the policy development process for complainer anonymity, shaping the reforms proposed, supported by our evidence in Holyrood. We are very pleased this has been recognised.”
The Socio-Legal Studies Association is the UK’s leading forum for legal research. The winners will be announced at a dinner at The Grand Hotel in Brighton on March 31.
