Crown Office receives police reports in case of former sheriff Alistair Duff

The Crown Office has received reports from Police Scotland following the arrest of former sheriff Alistair Duff in connection with alleged communications offences.

Concerns had been raised earlier this year over the fact no information had been made available following the arrest of Mr Duff, former head of the Judicial Institute for Scotland, who was appointed sheriff at Dundee in 2004.

The police have now revealed that he was charged with another offence last month.

A spokesperson for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service told Scottish Legal News: “Reports from Police Scotland have been received and will be considered by independent Crown counsel, who will issue instructions on next steps. This is standard in cases such as these and ensures that thorough and fair processes are followed.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson told SLN: “In October 2021 a man was arrested and charged in connection with alleged communications offences. A report was sent to the procurator fiscal.

“Following further detailed investigations, the man was arrested on 22 November 2022 and charged with an additional offence.”
