And finally... eye of the beholder

A billionaire has lost a $410 million lawsuit against his insurers after a judge ruled that five paintings in his collection suffered no visible damage in a fire.

Ronald O. Perelman was compensated in relation to a number of destroyed artworks after a 2018 fire at his home in the wealthy Hamptons area of New York.

However, he brought legal proceedings after insurers refused to pay out in relation to five paintings – two by Andy Warhol, two by Ed Ruscha and one by Cy Twombly.

Perelman insisted that the paintings had been damaged, saying the Twombly “didn’t have its spark” and had “lost its oomph”.

Judge Joel M. Cohen of the New York State Supreme Court dismissed the lawsuit on Friday, finding there was “no visible damage to the five paintings”.

He ruled that there was no reason the artworks could not be “enjoyed as they were before”, The New York Times reports.
