Edinburgh Tax Network: IR35 Seminars

The Edinburgh Tax Network, in conjunction with Terra Firma Chambers, will present a two-part series of seminars on IR35.

The first, on Thursday 21st November 2019, will be presented by Derek Francis and is entitled “IR35 and interposing Personal Service Companies: Where can you do it? Where will it work for the Taxpayer?”.

Derek is an Advocate, Barrister and CTA. He chairs the Edinburgh Tax Network, the Edinburgh Branch of the Chartered Institute of Taxation and is immediate past-Chairman of the Trusts, Fiduciaries and Executries Group of the Faculty of Advocates (TrustBar). His practice is focused mainly upon capital taxes in those contexts, but he advises and appears in relation to other taxes too. His Fellowship thesis was on proportionality and legal certainty in an indirect tax (VAT and Excise Duty) context.

The second, entitled “Advisory Issues and Computational Aspects re IR35”, will take place on Thursday 28th November 2019. The speaker will be Karen Davidson of Brodies LLP. Karen has over 20 years’ experience (in legal practice as well as at a senior level in a Big 4 consulting practice) of advising on employment tax issues, the structuring and implementation employee/management equity incentive arrangements as well as advising on the tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions, investments, corporate re-organisations and real estate transactions.

She is currently assisting a number of organisations to navigate their way through the proposed changes to IR35 in the private sector.

For both events, registration will commence at 12.30pm with the seminar starting at 1pm. Each has been accredited by the Faculty of Advocates as contributing 1 hour’s CPD for its own members and is eligible for a similar award from the Law Society for the solicitor branch of the profession. The seminars will take place at the Mackenzie Building, Old Assembly Close, Edinburgh.
