Legal Officer – Full Time (£49,401 to £59,152)

Applications are invited for the post of Legal Officer with the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission.

The Commission was established in 1999 by Part XA of the Criminal Procedure (Scotland) Act 1995 as an independent public body to review potential miscarriages of justice.

As a Legal Officer, you will be required to consider applications by or on behalf of convicted persons who claim that a miscarriage of justice has occurred in their cases. You will be responsible for conducting investigations and carrying out a thorough review of all applications and making recommendations to the Board of the Commission on whether or not applications should be referred to the High Court for determination.

Applicants must have a law degree and must have up-to-date knowledge of Scots criminal law and procedure. You will need excellent analytical skills, coupled with an ability to take a methodical, rigorous and objective approach to your work. In addition you will be expected to be an effective written and oral communicator, with first-class presentation and interpersonal skills. You will also be expected to be IT literate and familiar with standard Office packages.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a small specialist legal team with high levels of autonomy and exposure to a broad range of criminal cases.

It is intended that interviews will be held week commencing 26th October and 2nd November 2026. There is currently one full-time vacancy.
