At Thorntons Law, every moment matters. Join us as a Solicitor in our Land & Rural Business team, and you’ll feel inspired. You’ll feel connected. You’ll feel like you belong. And it all begins from the moment you join us.
That’s because we’ve created a different kind of law firm. Here, you’ll build relationships with clients and colleagues that really last. You’ll help shape what happens now, and what comes next. And we’ll support and encourage you to be the best you can be.
This is what life at Thorntons is all about. And this is your moment to be part of it.
About the role
We’re looking for a Solicitor (or a Trainee due to qualify later this year) to join our highly regarded Land & Rural Business team – one of the largest in Scotland and ranked in Legal 500 and Chambers UK. Based across our offices in Edinburgh, Forfar, Inverness and Perth, the team is deeply embedded in rural Scotland, offering expert, locally informed legal support to a broad range of clients.
In this role, which can be based in either Edinburgh, Forfar and Perth, you’ll support landowners, estates, farmers and rural businesses on the full spectrum of rural property matters – from purchase, sale, lease and transfer of farms and estates to renewable energy projects, woodlands, country houses and sporting interests. You’ll also be involved in diversification projects such as agri-tourism, and work alongside colleagues on succession planning and rural business structuring.
This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your career in a specialist area of law within a collaborative and forward-thinking team. It’s about:
• Rural Property Transactions – you’ll advise on the purchase, sale, lease and transfer of all types of rural property including farms, estates, crofts, country houses, forestry and sporting estates.
• Renewables and Diversification – you’ll work on renewable energy projects such as wind, solar and hydro, and support clients in diversification projects including agri-tourism, land development and leisure ventures.
• Crofting and Agricultural Law – you’ll advise on crofting regulation, assignations, decrofting and succession, and on agricultural tenancies including secure 1991 Act leases and modern limited duration tenancies.
• Succession and Business Structures – you’ll support clients with succession planning, inheritance issues and restructuring of rural businesses and estates.
• Land Management and Access – you’ll provide advice on rights of access, servitudes, boundary disputes and land reform legislation.
• Relationship Building – you’ll build long-term relationships with clients, contribute to business development activity, and work closely with colleagues across our firm to deliver a joined-up service.
What you’ll need
We’re looking for:
• Newly Qualified to 3 years’ PQE in property law (rural or agricultural property experience is an advantage, but not essential)
• A genuine interest in rural life and the rural sector
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering excellent client service
• A collaborative approach and the ability to build strong internal and external relationships
• Enthusiasm for contributing to business development and long-term client partnerships
