Family Law Solicitors
5+ years’ PQE | Central Belt
Rooney Family Law is a specialist Scottish family law firm. Family law is all we do, and we act exclusively for privately paying clients. We undertake no legal aid work.
Nine years ago, there were two of us. There are now seventeen, running around 600 live matters, and in that time only one solicitor has left. We are looking to appoint more than one solicitor, from at least five years’ post-qualification experience through to senior level.
The work
Our work includes divorce and financial provision, cohabitation claims under section 28 of the Family Law (Scotland) Act 2006, separation agreements, pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements, residence, contact and relocation, adoption, and protective orders.
We litigate in Sheriff Courts throughout the Central Belt, run Court of Session actions every year, and instruct junior and senior counsel where the value or complexity justifies it, including in matters with international elements. Across the team, the firm holds accreditations and specialist qualifications in family law, mediation and collaborative practice.
The role
You will run your own caseload with full autonomy. Support and discussion are available from the senior team whenever you want a second view, but there is no micromanagement.
We are looking for solicitors with a solid grounding in divorce, financial provision and cohabitation work, both litigated and negotiated, who are confident in Sheriff Court and comfortable negotiating financial settlements through to conclusion.
Location
We are flexible about which of our offices you work from. Our head office is in Hamilton, with a Glasgow city centre office at Blythswood Square and locations across the Central Belt including Edinburgh, Glasgow South, Falkirk, Livingston and Stirling.
If you are based in Edinburgh, Stirling, Falkirk, Livingston or Lanarkshire, we would rather build around you than have you commute past your own front door. We allocate cases by geography as well as capacity. One day a week working from home is also available.
Terms
- Salary: Competitive salary, reviewed on merit.
- Bonus: 10% of annual fees billed above a threshold of 3.5 times salary. Every fee earner has exceeded target in each of the eight years the scheme has run.

- Development: All CPD funded, including the Old Course Family Law Conference, with full support towards Law Society accreditation in family law, mediation or collaborative practice.
- Practical: All necessary technology and equipment provided, with mileage paid at 45 pence per mile.
How we work
We are a modern, paper-light practice running on LEAP, with AI transcription and dictation software used throughout the firm. Attendance notes are generated automatically for your review rather than dictated, time entries are processed by the admin team, and client onboarding is handled centrally. The support structure is deliberate: it means solicitors spend their time on legal work.
Get in touch
If you are actively looking, we would like to hear from you. If you are settled where you are but curious, equally so. There is no formal process, no CV is needed to begin with, and every conversation is treated in confidence.
