Watch: Lord Neuberger lectures on the influences which shaped Lord Mansfield

Lord Mansfield

In The Inns of Court & Selden Society Annual Legal History Lecture 2024, former president of the Supreme Court Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury considers how Lord Mansfield’s jurisprudence was influenced by his politically dangerous family background, his deep learning and wide-ranging interests, and his political career.

Lord Mansfield (1705-93) is one of the giants of English legal history. He was instrumental in the development of English law, and in particular commercial law, and his decisions over the course of his 32 years as lord chief justice included definitions of fundamental legal principles. His decisions are still regularly cited in cases in England and Wales and in the United States.
