Turcan Connell smashes fundraising target for The Yard

In April 2016, Turcan Connell began fundraising for its inaugural charity of the year, The Yard and over the last twelve months it has held a number of events throughout the year including:

  • Hosting an inter-firm hockey tournament with a number of Edinburgh businesses
  • The 26 mile Kiltwalk
  • ‘Survival of the Fittest’ 10k
  • Dress Down Days
  • Bake Sales
  • As a result of those efforts, the firm has managed to raise a grand total of £13,000, smashing the £5,000 target set at the beginning of the year. A few members of the firm visited The Yard last month to hand over a cheque to Anna Robinson, The Yard’s senior fundraising officer. She gave a few examples of how the funds might be used by The Yard:

    Family Sessions

£13,000 pays for the delivery of The Yard’s family sessions for four weeks throughout the school holidays. This is a real lifeline to parents as The Yard is a place for their disabled and non-disabled children to be able to play together. Throughout the school holidays The Yard is open from 10.00am-4.00pm Monday-Friday and 10.00am-5.00pm on a Sunday.

    Football Club & Equipment

18 months ago The Yard established two football clubs as a result of children who came to The Yard, not being able to be part of their local or school team due to their behaviour not being understood and the children not being able to cope in this environment. The Yard has established two clubs - a junior and a senior team - with support from Play2Learn who provide professional football coaching. The sessions, held at Meadowbank Sports Centre, are very popular and well attended and the older team is now starting to arrange some games with other teams. The football clubs each cost £10,500 a year to run.

    10-14s club

The Thursday 10-14’s club is The Yard’s newest respite club and costs £13,900 a year to run. The club has 16 members with a wide variety of disabilities.
