Three schools go head-to-head in final of COPFS public speaking contest

Three Scottish secondary schools will this month battle it out in the final of a public speaking contest.

Pupils from St Andrews in Fife, Trinity High School, Renfrew, and St Aidan’s High School in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, will go head-to-head for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service’s (COPFS) national schools public speaking competition trophy.

The final will take place on June 11 in Parliament House, Edinburgh.

And it comes after a record-breaking entry this year of 117 teams representing 72 schools from all over the country.

The topic which the pupils will have to master is: “What equality law would you introduce and why?”

In closely fought semi-finals, St Andrews overcame Armadale Academy, St Aidan’s defeated King’s Park Secondary, Glasgow, and Trinity High School came out on top over Grantown Grammar.

This is the second year in succession Trinity High School has reached the final. The competition started in Glasgow in 2012 and quickly became popular with pupils and teachers.

It represents part of the work done by Scotland’s prosecution service to improve understanding of equality and diversity issues.

The outcome of the final will rest on the judges, who this year will be Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain KC, Solicitor General Ruth Charteris KC and Paul Harvey, assistant principal crown counsel.
