Support for undercover policing inquiry in Scotland mounts

Practitioners, activists, students, trade unionists, and parliamentarians gathered at the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday at an event organised by the Scottish Legal Action Group (SCOLAG) on the subject of undercover policing in Scotland.

Sponsored by Neil Findlay MSP and Liam McArthur MSP, the event heard addresses from Eamon H. Keane, convenor of SCOLAG, Paul Heron of the Public Interest Law Centre in London, and Dr Nick McKerrell, lecturer in law at Glasgow Caledonian University.

Mr Keane set out SCOLAG’s position of support for a public inquiry into undercover policing in Scotland.

Mr Heron outlined his experiences of undercover “political policing” in England and Wales and of the current public inquiry operating south of the border. He expressed support for the holding of a separate inquiry in Scotland.

Dr McKerrell analysed the Scottish government’s reasons for refusing to hold its own public inquiry into undercover policing, articulated the lacuna that currently existed in Scotland, and stressed the importance of building public awareness of the issue.

Thereafter, the meeting heard a variety of powerful contributions from those with experience and interest in “political policing” in Scotland.
