Sumburgh fatal accident inquiry to begin

A fatal accident inquiry (FAI) into a helicopter crash in the North Sea is to begin next week, a court has been told.

Four offshore workers were killed when a Super Puma helicopter crashed on its approach to Sumburgh Airport in Shetland in August 2013.

At a preliminary hearing held online, Martin Richardson QC said that the Crown was prepared to begin next week.

A report from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) found that the pilots had failed to properly monitor the aircraft’s flight instruments and to notice airspeed was falling until it was too late to stop the Super Puma from crashing into the sea.
