Students secure four-figure settlement in employment dispute

Arwen Mackenzie

The Aberdeen Law Project obtained a four-figure settlement in connection with an employment dispute.

Lead adviser Arwen Mackenzie and second adviser Nina Groden along with the ALP team supported their client throughout a dispute relating to discrimination with her former employer.

Throughout the process the team drafted a detailed Data Subject Access Request to obtain key evidence relevant to the claim, entered into early conciliation with Acas, and engaged in negotiations with the respondent’s representative, providing strategic legal advice to the client throughout the process.

As a result of the negotiations, the matter was successfully resolved through settlement, whereby a four-figure sum in compensation for the client was reached without the need for tribunal proceedings.

The client said: “I cannot thank [them] enough for the support, compassion and professionalism they showed me throughout my case. From the very beginning, they took the time to genuinely understand my situation and circumstances. They were incredibly knowledgeable, approachable and understanding, and I never felt judged or made to feel like my questions were a burden. They guided me through what could have been an extremely overwhelming and complicated process, explaining everything clearly and patiently at every stage…”

Ms Mackenzie said: “This case gave me valuable experience in client representation in an employment context, from drafting the Data Subject Access Request to participating in settlement negotiations. Being involved securing a positive outcome for my client by supporting her through early conciliation and settlement was a truly incredible experience - the importance and value of giving back to the community has never been so strongly reinforced for me as when I was working on this case, and I am so glad that we were able to reach an agreement our client was satisfied with.”
