Strathclyde University unveils tribute to late Joe Thomson

On Wednesday Strathclyde University Law School unveiled its tribute to the late Professor Joe Thomson, who had been its chairman between 1985 and 1990.

The sculpture was created by the celebrated Archie Forrest and recast with the generous permission of Professor Thomson’s widow, Annie. Attendees were reminded by the artist that it is not a bust, but a head.

An audience with strong connections to Strathclyde, and including many of Professor Thomson’s old students, heard from Professor Kenneth Norrie of Strathclyde Law School, Lord Tyre, Sheriff Sean Murphy of Glasgow Sheriff Court, Frances McMenamin QC, and Claire Lynch of Raeside Chisholm, Solicitors.

Professor Norrie told Scottish Legal News: “The evening, at which some drink was available, took the form of a number of speakers sharing their fondest and happiest memories of one of the Scottish legal world’s truly unique characters, a man who generated fondness and respect in everyone he met.

“The bronze head will ensure that future generations of law students at Strathclyde remember a man much missed.”
