SLN Spotlight: Michael Kelly

Michael Kelly

Michael Kelly, a partner at MacRoberts LLP, is the subject of this week’s SLN Spotlight.

What has been your best experience as a lawyer?

Genuinely, joining MacRoberts just over 10 years ago.

I came to MacRoberts at the end of my traineeship, and it was a point that I had become disenchanted with law. The culture and environment I joined was completely different (and a perfect fit), and from that day I have never looked back. I can honestly say that I have enjoyed (almost) every day that I have worked here.

What has been your worst experience as a lawyer?

My traineeship. I was not a good, or remotely disciplined, student when I was at university, and the transition to professional life came as a colossal shock to the system.

Why did you choose the law?

I wanted to study something that straddled business, and I thought it would give me a good platform for future choices.

Who or what has been the greatest professional influence in your life?

The two partners that I worked with at MacRoberts, Neil Kennedy and Robert Burns. Brilliant mentors who allowed me to develop in my own way. And my Dad, who ran his own business throughout his life, and was a tremendous example of ambition and courage.

What advice would you give to anyone considering a career in the law?

It’s a cliché, but if you really want to succeed, you must be prepared to work bloody hard. So, pursue a discipline that you enjoy, otherwise I can’t see how you will ever fulfil your potential or remain remotely satisfied.

Also, if you have real talent, you should join MacRoberts.

What would you want to be if you were not a lawyer?

A contemporary dancer.

How do you relax after work?

I spend time with my wife and two children. Whilst the kids are very tiring, they are the most enjoyable and rewarding thing I have ever experienced.

What is your favourite holiday destination and why?

St. Andrews – I have gone there every year since I was born. I just find it a very relaxing and enjoyable place to be.
