SLN Spotlight: Calum Fife

The SLN Spotlight falls on Calum Fife (pictured) this week, an associate specialising in insurance law at Weightmans (Scotland) LLP.

What has been your best experience as a lawyer?

I’ve had lots of good experiences, so it’s difficult to single out one as the best. Winning cases and getting good results for clients is always satisfying. I have previously acted in cases involving children which was really rewarding. I do have particularly fond memories of resolving a very acrimonious dispute about a graveyard plot as a trainee, which sticks in the mind.

What has been your worst experience as a lawyer?

Conducting a Proof when I was quite newly qualified, where everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. My opponent was a party litigant who was very much enjoying his day in court, which compounded the misery. In my defence, I was passed the case very shortly before the hearing by another solicitor – you know who you are! However, I actually learned a lot from the experience and it has probably made me a better lawyer in the long run.

Why did you choose the law?

I can’t say I had a burning desire to become a lawyer. I really didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do when I was choosing what to study at university. Law seemed like a degree that would give me a good grounding for doing a variety of jobs. Once I got the degree it seemed the natural step to do the diploma and try for a traineeship. The TV show L.A. Law probably also had something to do with me choosing it. However, whilst I’m happy I made the right decision, the reality of being a lawyer hasn’t been quite as glamorous as on TV.

Who or what has been the greatest professional influence in your life?

All my bosses over the years have helped to bring me on professionally and to become the lawyer I am today. I’m sure some people might think I’m insulting them by saying that!

What advice would you give to anyone considering a career in the law?

It’s a long slog to become a lawyer and not as glamorous as you might imagine, but I have no regrets. I really enjoy being a lawyer and have found my career so far to be rewarding and fulfilling. So, go for it!

What would you want to be if you were not a lawyer?

A professional golfer.

How do you relax after work?

I have young twin boys, so I like to “relax” spending time with them.

What is your favourite holiday destination and why?

Greece. I went there a lot as a child as my uncle is Greek and lived with my Aunt out there. I haven’t plucked up the courage to brave the four-and-a-half-hour flight with my boys yet, but hopefully soon.
