A partner in Balfour+Manson has been honoured for his outstanding contribution to personal injury law – joining a colleague as one of only three lawyers to receive the accolade.

Iain Nicol has been accredited as only the third fellow of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) in Scotland, joining his colleague David Short and Ronnie Conway of Conway Accident Law.

Elaine Motion, executive chairman of Balfour+Manson, said: “It’s a real privilege to get this accreditation, for Iain and for the firm. To have two of only three APIL Fellows in Scotland shows the strength of Balfour+Manson in this area and recognises the tremendous contribution both Iain and David have made to personal injury law in Scotland.

“The criteria for fellow status are challenging – including being recognised by peers as demonstrating professional and intellectual leadership in the field.”

Mr Nicol, who ran his own company, Compensation Lawyers Scotland Ltd, for 12 years before joining Balfour+Manson as a partner in May 2016, said: “I am very honoured to receive the fellowship and to join David as one of only three fellows in Scotland. There is lots happening in the field and Balfour+Manson is very closely involved in all discussions and developments about personal injury law in Scotland.”

Mr Nicol, a regular chair and speaker at conferences, has been accredited as a specialist in personal injury law by the Law Society of Scotland since March 2003 and in professional negligence law since 2006.

He was a member of the Scottish Civil Justice Council Costs & Funding Committee 2014-2017 which worked on the implementation of the Taylor Report on civil litigation costs and funding; a member of the Law Society’s Civil Justice Committee and a member of its working group tasked with the practical implementation of aspects of the Civil Litigation (Expenses and Group Proceedings) (Scotland) Act 2018.

Mr Short, a litigation partner with Balfour+Manson, has 25 years’ experience in personal injury claims. He specialises in areas including aviation accidents and is representing clients in the Malaysian Airline MH17 crash over Ukraine in July 2014.
