Scottish lawyers in New York launch new foundation to foster transatlantic legal connections

The Scottish Bar Association of New York (ScotBarNY) has announced the launch of the ScotBarNY Foundation, a charitable public foundation formed with the purpose of advancing the relationship between legal professionals and students in Scotland and the United States.

Over 200 legal and law-related professionals who either graduated from Scottish universities or spent time working or studying in Scotland are active in the New York City area.

This number continues to grow on a monthly basis. Until recent years, there was no specific association for developing the cultural relationship between these individuals, or forming a bridge between legal professional networks in Scotland and the US.

From 2019 onwards, ScotBarNY aims to establish itself as the preeminent forum where cross-Atlantic law and law-related Scottish and American professional relationships are fostered.

Fraser Grier, ScotBarNY board member, told Scottish Legal News: “From what started as a group of Scottish lawyers devoting their time to assist others looking overseas for work or study, ScotBarNY aims to become a key forum for forging connections between professionals and students in Scotland and the United States.

“The ScotBarNY Foundation will enable legal and law-related communities on both sides of the Atlantic to support several new initiatives, such as our newly launched TAM Talks series.

“In 2019 we will also be formalizing our support for work experience placements for students and graduates of Scottish and American universities.”
