Firms urged to promote powers of attorney ahead of 2027 campaign

Law firms across Scotland are being urged to put power of attorney on the agenda for their clients, as The Dementia Trust builds on the success of its Planning Ahead pilot with a national campaign roll out in February 2027.
Firms can sign up now for exclusive access to leading experts in dementia and legal planning, as well as the opportunity to play their part in encouraging more people to put a Power of Attorney in place while they still have the capacity to do so.
The campaign is supported by Sandra McDonald, former public guardian for Scotland and chair emeritus of The Dementia Trust, and dementia expert Professor June Andrews, who will share their expertise with participating firms and help equip them with the knowledge and confidence to have meaningful conversations with their clients.
Ms McDonald said: “The legal profession has an incredibly important role to play in making Power of Attorney conversations happen earlier.
“Planning Ahead gives firms the opportunity to do that while also connecting with their clients and communities around an issue that touches so many families.”
Participating firms will pledge to participate in a dedicated POA Month in February 2027, raising awareness among clients and donating 10 per cent of POA income to The Dementia Trust. The campaign is a platform to engage clients, demonstrate specialist expertise and build knowledge, all while helping families take practical steps towards protecting their future and raising vital funds to support those living with dementia and their carers.
Participating firms will be provided with a package of resources including FAQ videos by Professor Andrews and Ms McDonald, as well as being invited to exclusive Planning Ahead breakfast events that bring together legal professionals and leading experts in dementia, capacity and future planning.
Last year’s pilot campaign in Edinburgh supported 151 people with powers of attorney, while donations of more than £7,000 were generated for the Dementia Trust. Activity across participating firms also increased by 56 per cent compared with February 2025.
The Dementia Trust is a Scotland based charity that has spent nearly 40 years improving the lives of people living with dementia, their carers and the professionals who support them.
