Scottish Arbitration Centre – Third Arbitrator Training Day

The Scottish Arbitration Centre’s Arbitrator Training Day - Arbitration (Scotland) Act 2010: Five Years On - will be taking place next week on Thursday 24 September 2015.

The conference will focus on best practice and provide practical guidance on acting as an arbitrator in a dispute under the Scottish Arbitration Rules (forming Schedule 1) to the Arbitration (Scotland) Act 2010. It will look at how to apply the Rules to common problems; deal with difficult cases; and avoid challenges to awards.

Jim Mather, chairman of Homes for Scotland, will provide the keynote address, five years after the Arbitration (Scotland) Act 2010, which he was responsible for when a minister in government, came into force.

Alan Redfern, past vice-president of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris, will talk about the opportunities for Scottish practitioners internationally and the work of the ICC.

Mr Redfern is an arbitrator at One Essex Court in London; the co-author of Redfern and Hunter on “International Arbitration”; and devised the Redfern Schedule, which is now used in arbitral proceedings worldwide.

Neil Kelly, chairman of the Scottish Branch of CIArb, will talk delegates through the Act and discuss practical considerations.

Rachael Kelsey and Sheriff Wendy Sheehan, training convenors at FLAGS, will present the practical arbitration workshops, and Brandon Malone, chairman of the Centre, will provide an update from the Centre.

The day will be rounded off with a wine reception.

Andrew Mackenzie, chief executive of the Centre, said: “This event will mark five years on from the coming into force of the Arbitration (Scotland) Act 2010 and the Centre’s third Arbitrator Training Day, but the first at the Centre’s stunning new premises on Princes Street, overlooking Edinburgh Castle.

“The event is again sponsored by Hill International, and this year supported by RICS Scotland. The event will be of interest to panel members of all arbitral appointment referees in Scotland; those currently acting as arbitrators; those interested in becoming an arbitrator; and anyone appearing as an agent in arbitration.”

There are still some delegate places left. The standard registration fee for the event is £110, but named members of the Centre are entitled to a discounted registration fee of £90.

The programme for the day and registration form can be accessed here.
