Scots law graduate murdered in Los Angeles

A Scottish woman who moved to the United States to pursue her dream of becoming a defence lawyer has been murdered in Los Angeles.

June Bunyan, 37, who grew up on the Isle of Arran, was found dead in her home on 11 September with “traumatic neck injuries”, police said.

Jonathan Renteria, 25, has been charged with murder, mutilation and sexual contact with human remains. He is being held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles on $4 million (£3 million) bail.

Bunyan, who sometimes used the name June Renteria, founded Renteria Paralegal Services last year, specialising in immigration law.

Her friend Vicky Tulika has launched a crowdfunding appeal for repatriation and funeral costs, which had raised more than £6,000 by Thursday.

Ms Tulika wrote: “With unimaginable heartbreak, we share the devastating news that our beloved daughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend, June Bunyan, was tragically taken from us due to a violent crime in the United States. Our lives are forever changed.”

A graduate of Robert Gordon University, Ms Bunyan was described as “exceptionally accomplished” and “known for her vibrant personality, infectious laugh, and deeply compassionate heart”.

Ms Tulika added: “Driven by courage and determination, June moved to America to sit the bar exam and pursue her dream of becoming a defence attorney. She worked tirelessly to build herself a better life. June’s life was cut short so far from home, and we are now faced with the heartbreaking task of bringing her back to the UK. She can then be laid to rest with the dignity and love she deserves, surrounded by family and friends.”
