Scotland’s domestic abuse helpline marks 10 years

Scottish Women’s Aid is marking 10 years of Scotland’s Domestic Abuse and Forced Marriage helpline as it responds to record levels of demand for support.

Launched in early 2016 with support from the Scottish government, the service began with just five staff and a phone line and received around 3,000 calls in its first year. The helpline now has more than 30 staff members and responded to more than 20,000 calls and messages last year. In total the helpline has responded to more than 100,000 calls since its formation.

Dr Marsha Scott, chief executive of Scottish Women’s Aid, said: “What we are seeing through the helpline is not a sudden surge in domestic abuse, but a clearer picture of what has always been there. Official figures only ever show the tip of the iceberg. When people are made aware of safe, trusted ways to get help, many more come forward.

“Scotland’s Domestic Abuse and Forced Marriage helpline can be the first point of contact for someone experiencing abuse, or for a friend, family member or professional who is worried about someone else. Our specialist team provides confidential, positive support, practical information and safety guidance, and helps callers explore their options in a way that works for them, whether that’s by phone, text, WhatsApp, web chat or email, at any time of day or night.”

“The scale of demand reinforces both the seriousness of domestic abuse in Scotland and the vital importance of ensuring this service remains visible, accessible and properly resourced.”
