Sarah Loosemore has been elected as deputy clerk of the Faculty of Advocates and was formally introduced to members at Parliament House yesterday.

Ms Loosemore has a mixed criminal and civil practice, with a focus on criminal appeals, extradition, clinical negligence, public law and inquiries. Since calling to the Scottish bar in 2022, she has appeared in the Sheriff Court, the Court of Session and the High Court.

She has also appeared as junior counsel in the Supreme Court in Daly and Keir v HMA and has secured numerous reported decisions in criminal and extradition appeal matters in the Sheriff Appeal Court and the High Court of Justiciary. She is instructed as junior counsel to the Sheku Bayoh Inquiry.

Before coming to Scotland, Ms Loosemore called to the bar in Ontario, Canada, in 2002 and practised there for 15 years, primarily in criminal, regulatory and public law.

Dean of Faculty Roddy Dunlop KC said: “Faculty was fortunate to have three hugely talented juniors standing for the position of deputy clerk, vacated by the well-deserved elevation of Lesley Irvine to the Rank and Dignity of His Majesty’s Counsel. We would have been well served by any of the applicants.

“In the event, the election was won by Sarah Loosemore, who in her short time at the bar has already shown an admirable ability to grapple with difficult and hugely important issues in cases before full benches and the Supreme Court. Her abilities will be of considerable benefit to the office bearers and to Faculty as a whole, and I wish her every success in this new role.”

Ms Loosemore said: “I am honoured to have been chosen by my colleagues and friends as the deputy clerk of Faculty. Since moving to Scotland from Canada and calling to the Scottish bar, I have been very grateful for the warm welcome and generous support I have received.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to make my contribution to Faculty in this new role, especially on behalf of the junior bar.”

Clerk of Faculty David Welsh said: “I am really pleased to see that Sarah has been elected as deputy clerk. She brings with her a wealth of experience, from Scotland and beyond, and I am looking forward to working together, making the best use of our combined skills for the benefit of Faculty and its members.”
