Report welcomed on making Holyrood a better guarantor of human rights

Judith Robertson

The Scottish Human Rights Commission has welcomed a report from a Holyrood committee on the steps the Scottish Parliament can take in order to become a better human rights guarantor.

Commenting on the Equalities and Human Rights Committee report, Judith Robertson, chair of the commission, said: “The recommendations are wide-ranging and have the potential to transform the impact human rights will have on the business of the Parliament and the government and ultimately on the lives of the people of Scotland.

“On Monday 10 December 2018 we will celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the UK prepares to leave the European Union, so it is both timely and important that the rights of people in Scotland are further respected, protected and fulfilled.

“This report acknowledges and builds on that fact and its recommendations to a broad range of actors in Scotland reflect the important human rights principles of participation, empowerment, non-discrimination, legality and accountability.”
